Fantastic class! Day 1 with Mike was fun and lighthearted while staying true to the necessity of firearm safety and the responsibilities that go along with firearm possession. Mike made a real effort to get to know our names, include us in the discussion, and keep us engaged. My favorite part (besides the range, of course) was learning about the Five Points of justification for shooting in self defense. Day 2 was a step-wise progression for learning the parts of a pistol, how to draw from the holster and get into ready position, and then how to actually shoot on the range. I felt extremely comfortable having Mike, Wendy, and Andrew as our instructors.
Even if the process for obtaining a NYS pistol permit is purposefully complicated, I'm glad that I took this course with Rochester Personal Defense and recommend that everyone take it. You may never purchase a pistol, but understanding how they work and how to arm/disarm them could save your life or someone else's one day.

I have absolutely no complaints about Rochester Personal Defense. Mike, the instructor for the 18 hour course was phenomenal. He did a great job teaching the class all while having a good time. That definitely helped the time go by fast. He was ready and willing to answer all questions at any time. Every instructor there was very knowledgeable and friendly. They did a good job helping everyone, from people not knowing anything about firearms to the more experienced people. I definitely recommend Rochester Personal Defense for ANY of their classes.

I took the 47 hr armed guard course with Joseph laiosa and it was great! He’s an awesome instructor, kept it fun and always made sure we got the training we wanted to get out of each day even if it meant standing in the rain for hours running drills until we were satisfied. He’s a very knowledgeable guy and always had the answers to our questions and explained the laws in a very digestible manner. If you’re looking to get your armed guard license, this is the place to take the course. He’s going to make sure you leave prepared for all aspects of the job.

The trainers were great, the course was great, they keep it fun and friendly while teaching you a ton of gun safety laws, proper way to hold and when and we're you are allowed to use your firearm. The training is something I would highly recommend to anyone. Take a look at there website and do yourself a favor and sign up for the many diffrent classes that they have because the offer a variety of diffrent things.

The course provided background on the Byrna company, the legal status of the launcher, self-defense applications and considerations, safety guidelines and a hands-on session on the “firing” range, where interested buyers could try Byrna’s three most popular models - the CL, SD and LE.

Mike is truly a credit to the industry, and I am very glad and fortunate to have attended his class. While I am not in favor of mandatory things, a class with Mike should be mandatory to ensure we are putting safe behaviors out into the world of gun ownership.

I took the 18-hour course in Savona, NY with Dana Gridley. One, because I wanted knowledge and experience from a trained professional. Family and friends are not always the best teachers. Two, because NYS requires it for CCW, (personally, I would have wanted to take a class even if it wasn't required). I was nervous at first having not handled a firearm in almost 40 years. Dana made the class interesting and fun even though there is a plethora of information to cover. He was very interactive during that classroom session. Definitely NOT boring! The live fire was a little stressful for me, but Dana was very patient and encouraging. By the end of the course, I felt less nervous. Lol He encouraged us to get more training, which I will certainly do. He gave us the information we needed to do that. Dana was a wonderful instructor, and I would look forward to working with him again.

I took the 18-hour course in Savona, NY with Dana Gridley. One, because I wanted knowledge and experience from a trained professional. Family and friends are not always the best teachers. Two, because NYS requires it for CCW, (personally, I would have wanted to take a class even if it wasn't required). I was nervous at first having not handled a firearm in almost 40 years. Dana made the class interesting and fun even though there is a plethora of information to cover. He was very interactive during that classroom session. Definitely NOT boring! The live fire was a little stressful for me, but Dana was very patient and encouraging. By the end of the course, I felt less nervous. Lol He encouraged us to get more training, which I will certainly do. He gave us the information we needed to do that. Dana was a wonderful instructor, and I would look forward to working with him again.

Mike is amazing! I couldn’t have spent 2 days not awake with anyone else but him. He kept class light and fun but also very serious!!
When I signed up for this class I was dreading the 18 “hour”…
But I’m so glad I did it and I’m so glad that I have this new knowledge that I didn’t have before.
Highly highly recommend this place!!!!!!!!!

Tom/Mike/Matt are a great trio.
Mike did it again! Susan wasnt even wanting to go to last evenings class let alone fire the handgun. Mike said no problem when we walked in. By the end of the night she had put 2 of 5 rounds into the green center and all 5 groups within 4 inches of each other.
Matt stood right by her for each shot, gently assisting/coaching her. Susan left extremely proud of what she overcame and credits your team for that success.

The instructors were great and kept the class engaging I had no prior experience handling a gun but they made me feel at ease lu and David were great I had fun and learn some pretty interesting things and gave me lots of feedback. I will definitely come back to take more classes here.

Made 8 hours of Excel presentation seem like a movie experience yet it was very informative. At the range, the entire team was very professional and reassuring. I recommend this course to anyone even if they don’t plan on acquiring a firearm.

Just do it!!! Dave and Wendy are incredible instructors with more knowledge and skill than other instructors I have worked with. I'm a novice shooter and I felt that I improved tenfold just after two days with these folks. This course was designed for more experienced shooters but I did not feel that I did not belong. I received expert advice and ran through all of the drills that were presented. BTW, I was the oldest(67 yo) and I would take this course every week if I could!
